At the time of writing, odds are the narrative of the game universe will not be seen within the game. It was of no importance to the game as a whole, but I would still like to offically note it down.
Who is the Player?
The “Overseer”, as named in the original GDD, works for an independent colonisation program called City Beyond the Stars, who motivate their Overseers to improve their colonies by providing blueprints and materials for idealistic buildings in exchange for resources that can be used to support existing colonies and various spacefaring vessels utilised by the program. These Overseers do not play a role in any form of politics to do with the colony on any scale, rather this is handled by other members of the program. The role itself is voluntary, individuals on more established worlds stating their interest in the role when booking places upon pioneering colony ships. Overseers live in the same kinds of quarters as all other colonists, as it is a utopian future, and are generally seen as just another member of the community (at least, in smaller colonies).
The universe at large
As a utopian future, there are no issues or threats to speak of. With abundant resources, highly efficent production and advanced technology available, the function of buildings, vehicles and products matters far less than thier look. Buildings that defy gravity, solar panels that look flowers and crops that grow every kind of plant matter possible are but trival matters in this universe, hence why a fledgling colony would be able to achieve such grand things.
This is not to say that there aren’t crisises and disasters. But by modern standards, they are trivial. These events include too many buildings being of similiar design, a shortage of a very specific type of cake or a lack of colonies that have interesting and unique landscapes. Such incidents do not cause panic, but rather just make for some interesting news amongst the reports of various and unending successes.
