Hello reader, I’m Matthew Messer, a student of Games Design and Art. For the second semster of our second year, we picked four Game Design Documents submitted by the class as a whole to go on and develop for the duration of the year. I am the Team Leader for one of those four projects, specifically “City Beyond the Stars”. City Beyond The Stars was designed by a classmate (The original GDD can be found here), and I have been tasked with making the game they have designed based on their Design Document.
But I’m not in this alone. I am by no means an artist, and City is a game all about making a beautiful city. Members of the class were subjected to interviews by myself, the other team leaders and our year’s tutor, the point of which was decide the teams. After a long series of short interviews, near all decisions were unanimous and I found myself working with four 2D artists. These were made up of an individual with a specialism in architecture, two artists with prefrences towards characters and an individual with a host of skills varying from Music to UI Design.
So that’s the gist of it all, one coder and four artists with a semster’s worth of time to produce a vertical slice in time for a public showing alongside the other 3 projects.
